Winter Getting You Down?

Members, mark your calendar for Sunday, February 2, 2025, from 2-4 for our annual League members' Winter Doldrums Party. For more than thirty years, the Doldrums Party has proven to be the best antedote to the cold, the snow, the icy sidewalks, the cold, the sleet, the cold—you get the picture!  The Doldrums Party is a warm gathering with  lively conversation, lucious treats, and wine and other beverages, as well as our fabulous silent auction. Look for your invitation after the first of the year in the upcoming issue of Update.

Blog Post

In 2023, at least 322 bills restricting voting access were introduced in state legislatures nationwide.

Though many of these restrictions may appear simple and easy to comply with, they often have a huge impact on voters with disabilities, people of color, indigenous communities, students, young voters, and older adults. Four common voting restrictions — third-party ballot drop-off restrictions, early voting restrictions, ballot drop-box restrictions, and strict absentee ballot requirements — are particularly devastating.

Membership/Renewal form is available on our JOIN page.

Pauline (Polly) Kennedy and Ava Calhoun were named the 2024 recipients of the Students Inside Albany Scholarship.

The League advocates for issues but does not support or oppose any candidates for office. Every League Board of Directors at each level is required to have a non-partisan policy. The League does not have a single policy that covers all Leagues. A link to the nonpartisan policy of the LWV of the Cooperstown area is available on our website.

There is no “right” age to give back to your community. But for members of the League of Women Voters (LWV)—50 state League (and the District of Columbia), and more than 750-plus local leagues— there are key ways that leadership, which includes many volunteers older than age 50, is working to revolutionize our civic life. That work includes bringing people together, inspiring hope around government and expanding the franchise to new citizens.
